The real location is at 24134 Mission Blvd, Hayward, CA 94544, USA. It was built in 1966. This is an original Googie building, an American architectural style popular for roadside restaurants between the 40s and 70s. Unfortunately, this location was remodeled in 2021 , and now it looks like any other fast food joint.

Prototype

Front view of the Lego prototype

You always want to start with a good prototype to understand proportions and figure out the challenges. Here, the angle of the roof and the proportions of the window were important to get right.

You also want to be able to open the roof, but since it’s slanted, the easiest way is to use hinges.

Stickers

The sign uses custom stickers on transparent vinyl, from a vectorialized photo.

Signs

Rhombi in the real signage

The geometric signage was important to capture. I wanted to limit sticker use, so I built a visual alternative.

The building features stone veneer in midcentury style.

I tried a few techniques and shapes, but simple SNOT with 1x1 tiles and cheese slopes looked best.
